Rain Winter and the hoof

Anyone else started sectioning off the muddy bits of the fields in the hope of reducing soggy hoof syndrome aka annoying abscesses you can’t find for weeks and weeks until they burst out of the most unexpected areas

Our Thoroughbred feet certainly keep us on our human toes this time of year as the rain starts to water log the ground and the grass turns to a mud bath fit for the most royal of hippos
Luckily at the moment we are still on 24/7 turnout but I don’t think it will be long before with we start stabling at night
For my brown boy that is prone to abscesses I have a tub of Rebound at hand to help soothe the sole. Rebound is a potent, super sticky hoof packing, formulated to draw pain, soreness and inflammation out of the hoof. The best bit is it adheres directly to the hoof so no more duct tape. This boy is notorious for his shoe pulling as well and rebound is my saviour as it takes out the sting of the stones.
Epsom Salts - Draws out heat and soreness
Iodine - Toughens weak soles while eliminating bacteria and thrush
Arnica - Acts as a natural anti-inflammatory
Pine Tar - Keeps the correct moisture balance within the hoof.
You can get all the Rebound ingredients separatly and do it all yourself but I have a full time job and two horses in work so anything that saves me time as well as healing and promoting hoof growth gets my tick
For my orange boy we just have to try and check he isn’t taking in too much moisture. He is barefoot but takes in too much water and his hoof expands too much making him sore. We managed not to have to put front shoes on last year and fingers crossed with management we can keep him barefoot this winter (think of your own fingernails that become soft after washing dishes or bathing).
This boy has a nice dry bed to stand on at night so some of the moisture can soak away from the hooves
Rebound is also used to help soothe and rebalance
